PSA: Alcone

Sometimes I think there’s a place you’ve just got to know about and my Public Service Announcements (PSAs) will give you the full skinny.

When people think makeup, they generally think Sephora.  Sephora is amazing, but there is a little known store in Hell’s Kitchen that has become my new go-to.  I am by no means a makeup junkie, but I still got wrapped up in all the products Alcone had to offer.  If you are, in fact, into makeup then you’ll get that kid in a candy store feeling.

You may not know the brands Alcone stocks (they were all new to me), but that’s because they are all professional makeup brands.  This is the stuff professional makeup artists use when they get someone ready for a photo shoot.  Alcone actually supplies the makeup for most of the Broadway theaters in the area and because of this business model, they are able to sell products to us regular folks for very reasonable prices.  As an example, you can get a set of false eyelashes + glue for $5 (cheaper than Duane Reade!) or a lip pencil for $6.50.  Some items can get a little pricier but even those are less expensive than at most other places.

I went to Alcone last Wednesday for an event where we took over the store after hours (with prosecco, naturally).  While we sipped and chatted, the sales staff, who are all professionally trained makeup artists, painted our faces and helped us choose products to buy.  I walked out with a ton of stuff and can’t wait to create some fun new looks.
